9. In Scotland the rise has been still sharper. The figures for early syphilis are on a slightly different basis from those for England and Wales, but the following shows the number of infections for the last four years - At civilian centres. By Services. Total. 1938 921 30 (estimated) 951 1939 1,025 30 (estimated) 1,055 1940 1,377 123 1,500 1941 2,684 439 3,123 10. In addition to the above figures in England and Wales and in Scotland it must be borne in mind that a number of additional infections occurred in the last two years among Dominions and Allied forces in this country, and among Allied merchant seamen, which are not included.
