COAL. Memo. by Minister of Fuel and Power.

15 Sep 1942

-2- counted on. The total numbers of ex-miners at work returned from the Army, R.A.F. and from other industries up to 5th September, 1942 were respectively:- Army 7,915 R.A.F. 1,173 Other Industries 5,520 (up to 15th August). The manpower position referred to above throws into sharp relief the unsatisfactoriness of the output during the first third of the coal year. In WP (42) 226 (paragraph 4) three assumptions were put forward about future efficiency in terms of output per man as a basis for calculating the labour force that would be required.
