2 Jul 1942

(THIS DOCUMENT IS THE PROPERTY OF HIS BRITANNIC MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT). SECRET. L.P. (42) 147. COPY NO. 57 2nd July, 1942. WAR CABINET. LORD PRESIDENT'S COMMITTEE. PRECAUTIONS AGAINST THE INTRODUCTION OF SMALLPOX FROM OVERSEAS. Memorandum by the Secretary of State for Scotland. 1. I think it right to draw the attention of my colleagues to an outbreak of smallpox in Scotland. The outbreak originated on a ship - the "Awatea" - arriving in the Clyde on 29th May from Bombay. The usual precautions, including the detention of the crew and vaccination of all persons on board, were taken but further cases have occurred and there have been to this date 32 patients in Glasgow and 3 in Swindon.
