SPEED OF PRIVATE MOTOR CARS. PROPOSAL TO LIMIT, TO 40 M.P.H. Memo. by HOme Secretary.

3 Jun 1942

### ###UMENT IS THE PROPERTY OF HIS BRITANNIC MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT). COPY NO. 1942. WAR CABINET. LORD PRESIDENT'S COMMITTEE. Proposal to limit the speed of private motor cars to 40 miles per hour. Memorandum by the Home Secretary. I appreciate the considerations which have led the of War Transport to propose that there should be an over- limit of 40 m.p.h. for motor vehicles which are not subject to restrictions at present. It is common ground speeds involve a disproportionate wear and tear of tyres ###proportionate consumption of petrol; and I recognise the ###nce of securing any possible economy, particularly in View restrictions which are being imposed in the United States, I agree also that exhortation will not be sufficient by to prevent unnecessarily fast driving, and that it must be by legal sanctions which can be invoked if necessary.
