At their meeting on the 1st September the Committee had invited the Chancellor of the Exchequer to arrange for the appointment of a Committee of officials to consider:- (a) a scheme for increasing the allowances paid to other ranks in respect of second and subsequent children, with a view so bringing these allowances nearer to the amount of 8s.6d. a week now paid for the first child; (b) the question of increasing the allowances of married commissioned officers, up to the rank of captain in the Army (and corresponding rank in the other two Services) where the wife has a child or children; and (c) the question of diminishing the reduction in allowances which occurs when an officer is separated from his family owing to Service requirements.
