WAR CABINET LORD PRESIDENT'S COMMITTEE BEER Memorandum by the Minister of Food (1) During next summer there will be a serious shortage of beer equal to 8 weeks supply if drastic action is not taken very soon. (2) The shortage will be due to a lack of labour in the malting industry. A return of malt stocks and prospective output shows that by the end of the malting season there will be 90,000 tons less malt produced than is necessary to maintain last year's production yet last summer there was a shortage of beer in many parts of the country.
