It will be seen from the table above that the average weekly earnings in the industries covered by the enquiry increased from 89/- to 99/3 for men. According to my calculations the income tax payable by a single man in respect of total earnings of 90/- a week was about 9/- a week as a. result of the budgets of 1940. Under the provisions of the Finance Act 1941 a single man whose average weekly earnings were 100/- in the period April to October 1941 will have £1. 0s. 10d. deducted from his earnings during the half year January to June 1942.
