The Agricultural Departments have themselves organised schemes for (a) schoolboy harvest camps, (b) working parties from schools in term time, (c) university student assistance, transfer or loan of County Council roadmen, (e) weekend the work by voluntary associations and town workers, (f) part-time local volunteers. The Army has provided very considerable assistance for the corn harvest. Temporary and partial withdrawal of this assistance, e.g. for manoeuvres etc., at the end of the corn harvest before the potatoes and sugar-beet had been lifted created a critical situation.
