MAN-POWER FOR THE MINING INDUSTRY. Note by President of the Board of Trade covering correspondence between himself and Minister of Labour and National Service.

22 Oct 1941

LETTER OF 15TH OCTOBER FROM THE MINISTER OF LABOUR AND NATIONAL SERVICE TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE. In regard to the return of ex-miners to the mines about which you wrote to me on 9th October, the latest figure up to 13th October is 23,938, and we hope to reach the agreed target of 25,000 within the next ten days or so. As things have worked out there does not really seem to be a good prospect of going much beyond this. There has turned out to be a surprisingly large number of ex-miners who are unfit, or can make out a case that they are unfit, and while we obtain medical evidence about doubtful cases, nothing much more can be done about this very large category.
