3. Thus the additional cost to the Exchequer of the proposals now before the Committee is about £4 millions i.e. £2.2 millions plus £1.9 millions. These proposals include the provision of school meals for a million children. If universal school meals were to be the ultimate goal of policy, the net cost to public funds on the present basis i.e. assuming that the same proportion of parents continued to pay the same proportion of the cost as now) of providing school meals on 210 days a year for the 5 million children in public elementary schools would be about £183/4 millions.
