INLAND TRANSPORT OF COAL. Memo. by Minister of War Transport.

13 Aug 1941

It seems that the main difficulty will be in dealing with the additional coal to be raised in Northumberland and Durham. Assuming a 10 per cent. increase in this area over last winter, this addition will amount to approximately 65,000 tons per week. Last winter there was a special programme of 190 coal trains per week. The possibility of increasing this programme to 250 trains per week, equivalent to an addition of 30,000 tons, is now being examined. It is clear, however, that it would involve a drastic curtailment of passenger services which could only be effected if steps were taken to limit passenger travel.
