STANDSTILL ORDER ON CLOTHING PRICES. Memo. by Chancellor of the Exchequer.

28 May 1941

Treasury, Great George 28th May, Street, S.W.1. I have been in consultation with the Minister of Food with a view to enlisting his aid in keeping the Food Index at its present level, despite the seasonal peak of some 10 points which normally occurs on 1st July on account of new potatoes; but we are working on altogether too narrow a margin and if we are to maintain our general cost of living policy it is incumbent on us to do something as quickly as possible to hold the price of clothing, which has hitherto been left entirely outside any direct scheme of Government control, though it is one of the staple articles of common life.
