COAL PRICES. RECENT ADVANCE OF: Memo. by Chancellor of the Exchequer and President of the Board of Trade.

28 May 1941

On this assurance the Delegate Conference accepted the Essential Work Order and the Miners' Executive shortly afterwards presented a demand to the owners for a minimum wage of 80/- a week. The owners' representatives were emphatic that in spite of the terms of the wages demand the grant of any substantial increase to the lowest paid workers - some of whom receive as little as 55/- a week - would lead to a demand from the higher paid workers. They therefore proposed to forestall the impending increase in the War Wage of 4d.
