themselves with particular views on the subject of wages and inflation have not been appointed to be independent members in order to remove any chance of hostile criticisms when difficult decisions have to be taken. Ministers of Labour have always found it to be wise to support the decisions of independent members and, taking a long view, it is clear that this policy is right so long as these members are carefully chosen and, when chosen, are left free to act with a full sense of responsibility and without Government direction.
