COAL PRODUCTION. (Previous Reference: L.P.(41) 50th Meeting, Minute 1.) TRANSPORT. Reduction of Railway Passenger Services. 1. The Committee had before them a Report by the Secretary for Mines for the month of October (L.P.(41) 196). This Report disclosed a satisfactory outlook for the winter 1941-42. The increasing coal consumption made it clear, however, that the long-term position called for an increase in the labour force to 720,000 in the Spring. THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE said that a conference was being arranged between representatives of employers and employed in the mining industry and of the Ministry of Labour, to examine the question of future recruitment to the mining industry.
